Frequently Asked Questions about Coaching.

  • Coaching is a collaborative process in which coach partners with client in an encouraging and

thought-provoking way to help the client to maximise their potential. The coach provides a

non-judgemental confidential space in which client can explore new ideas and possibilities to

bring about meaningful and positive change. In short coach empowers client to come up with

    their own solutions.

  • Counselling delves into the past to heal past wounds and trauma frequently offering therapeutic interventions to promote healing and may focus on diagnosing and treating a range of mental health disorders.

Coaching on the other hand focusses on the here and now and the way forwards. It is a journey of self-discovery journey where the coach helps client to identify habits, beliefs and patterns that may need to be changed to achieve their goals. The focus is on taking specific actions and making changes to reach objectives.

  • Following a discovery, the client signs up to a coaching programme which consists of a number of sessions over a specified amount of time. The initial coaching session is frequently about assessing the here and now, establishing where you are now versus where you want to go.

The subsequent sessions delve into the ‘who you are’ – the client’s values and beliefs (those unhelpful ones that hold you back), identifying what drives choices and decisions and working on a plan to make better choices aligned with the client’s values and priorities.

As the programme progresses, client is in full control of the coaching agenda and brings specific goals and challenges into the sessions using the sessions to map the best way forwards.

  • This varies depending on the client’s needs. The average coaching relationship lasts between 4 and 8 months but some can be up to 18 months. Sustained change involves rewiring the brain to think differently and this does not happen overnight. This can be discussed with the coach in the discovery call.

  • Always ensure you have a complementary discovery call (preferably via video) with your coach in advance of signing up for any programme to establish if this is somebody you feel that you can work with. Lay out your coaching requirements and ask how the programme would fit with your requirements. Read previous testimonials and ensure it resonates. Ask questions around how the programme works and you will get a gut feeling around whether this is a good fit for you.
